Tips for Section 3

The following tips should be kept in mind when the employer is conducting reverification of an employee's work authorization in Section 3 of the I-9 form.

bullet

Use this space to indicate a change in an employee’s name.

bullet

Employees with temporary work authorization must produce proof of their renewed work authorization. Enter the information relating to their renewed work authorization in this section.

bullet

A tickler system will inform HR staff when an employee’s work authorization expires, greatly aiding the monitoring and tracking of expiration dates.

bullet

Employees should be reminded 60 - 90 days prior to the expiration of their current work authorization that they will need to produce evidence of renewed work authorization or else be terminated as required by federal regulations.

bullet

If the renewed work authorization is good for only a temporary period of time (e.g. one year), the employer will have to enter the new expiration date in the ticker and conduct reverification again prior to the expiration of that new employment period.
